Smart Trades is all about supporting and mentoring people in the trades through apprenticeships and training. We put people first; their needs are our needs. We offer a personalised service, tailored to suit the individual.  We support both apprentices and employers to take the hassle out of the apprenticeship process.

We specialise in the following industries:

Motor, Collision Repair, Building, Roofing, Plumbing & Gas fitting, Drainlaying, Electrical, Scaffolding

Support and Mentoring

We offer a support service to our trades apprentices. We make regular visits to their workplace, offer night classes for theory tuition, one-on-one help, 24/7 availability by txt/ph/email, offer advice towards other support agencies in line with their individual learning plan.

Carpentry Apprenticeships

We offer a full apprenticeship qualification – National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4. This majors on pastoral care with more visits than the expected minimum of 4 per year. We support the apprentice (and employer) throughout the whole 52 months qualification; from the enrolment right through to completion and everything in between.

We provide a support service to the Skills Organisation covering the Far North and Kaipara Districts. We provide pastoral care across a number of trades including Roofing, Plumbing & Gas fitting, Drainlaying, Electrical, Scaffolding.

We provide a support service to the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) by way of a support and mentoring programme to a number of their apprentices. This is a programme designed for those who need additional support to progress through their apprenticeship.  Rick is one of only five mentors in the country doing this, via a pilot initiative by MITO.  Rick also does contract assessing for MITO to assist their staff in marking units/workbooks.

I-Car NZ training

We deliver Collision Repair Industry Training throughout the country via I-CAR NZ training programmes. Rick is one of only four trainers in NZ that teaches these programmes to upskill the likes of trade qualified panel beaters, apprentices, employers and insurance assessors. Rick is also a Welding Tester for I-Car NZ and the Collision Repair Association. This is an industry approved welding qualification delivered nationwide and Rick administers the testing in the North Shore and Northland regions.
